2nd Period
This course focuses on developing communication and thinking skills through the study of grammar, writing, and literature. The grammar study emphasizes the eight parts of speech, sentence patterns, and punctuation. The study of the writing process includes development of sentence skills and working with single paragraph and multi-paragraph writings with the intent of completing clear and focused essays. The literature study includes a basic understanding of literary terms and themes.

5th Period
This course focuses heavily on mastering grammar skills including the 8 parts of speech and sentence structure. The writing section continues to focus on process writing through essays and research writing. Literature will be emphasizing literary terms, themes, and analysis through novel studies and short stories while also studying some Shakespearean works. Students will learn the process of literary analysis and discuss literary elements while teaching students to analyze and evaluate authors and the philosophies behind the authors’ works.

6th Period
American Literature contains introductory essays for each unit providing an overview of the cultural and historical events and ideas influencing each literary period. The instruction for the literature selections is structured around the reading process approach. Students will improve close-reading skills with questions during reading that focus on the three strands of study: Analyze, Read, and Evaluate.
Writing & Grammar 11 teaches grammatical and usage principles while providing many opportunities for students to apply what they are learning to communication. Writing assignments will emphasize the academic essay and some research.

This course is designed to acquaint students with major authors in world literature in the context of world history and culture; Strengthening students reading skills while deepening their intellectual, cultural, and spiritual experience.

Principles of Communication
Analysis and understanding of the human communication process with attention to interpersonal and public applications. Includes interpersonal and group relationship experiences as well as public speaking. Projects will include job preparations such as shadowing, interviews, and preparation of a resume.
