American History is a year-long survey of the history of the United States from the colonial period to the dawn of the 20th century. Students will learn about the indigenous societies that existed in North America before European colonization, the religious and cultural background of Colonial America, the trials and tribulations faced by the nation’s founding fathers, the physical growth of the United States, and the great clash over slavery and states rights that culminated in the American Civil War. The course will end with a description of the “seeds” of America’s superpower status as the world approached the 20th century. Coursework will include daily reading and homework assignments, periodic in-class quizzes, tests taken at home under a parent’s supervision, and two research projects.

United States history lays out an exciting narrative of America's progress from its colonial origins and revolutionary birth, through the great trial of the Civil War, and into the 20th century as the nation stepped onto the world stage. More importantly, this class will challenge students to understand both the heights and depths of America's history. It is not a "my country, right or wrong" study, nor does it blame the United States for the world's problems. Rather, students will be presented with an unbiased account of America's triumphs and tragedies, its successes and failures. It will also develop students' ability to think critically about the events in America's past and how they apply to the numerous complex issues that face this generation.
